Meditation Cafe: What to Do When You Miss a Day or Ten…

Meditating daily is an ideal that many fail to adhere to. Life sometimes throws us curveballs and is full of opportunities to be distracted. Although it’s great to commit to a daily practice, it’s important not to let any shaming, judgement or disappointment with yourself, when you notice you’ve missed a day or ten, stop you from beginning again.

If you love your Meditation practice but find you’ve “fallen off” the Meditation Cushion, simply do just that, begin again with a renewed sense of enthusiasm. The Silence didn’t go anywhere. You did. You can come back to it anytime.

The Silence is not cross at you. It’s holding you always. Beating yourself up for missing your practice does nothing other than feed the negative voice in your head. Take any guilt and shaming, welcome it and transform it into the fuel of enthusiasm to re-engage with your practice.

Remind yourself of why you want to Meditate and what benefits it brings you long term, so you WANT to close your eyes. Be Grateful you have noticed you’ve been missing your practice. Celebrate the fact and simply begin again form a place of Joy and not from a place of obligation.

1 day missed out of 100 is better than Meditating for 50 and then quitting instead of re-engaging because you listened to the little voice of judgement and stopped. Remind yourself of the bigger picture often. Remind yourself that thoughts and judgements will inevitably arise and that’s ok, you don’t have to entertain them. Press the reset button in the moment you notice by putting your hand on your Heart, closing your eyes, listening to your Heartbeat. Get clear again on your intentions for you practice.

If you know that you’re going to be unable to manage a longer eyes closed session, try practicing with your eyes open as you go about your day. Remember Meditation is about becoming more Present, not moving into a trance like, or comatose state. Eyes open practice can help keep the thread of continuity on days where eyes closed practice appears impossible.

If you want to play, see what happens if you don’t take your self judgements so seriously. What if they are no more important than a thought of going to the supermarket to buy some food. That doesn’t mean bypassing them either. Can you see them for what they are, feel the discomfort of shame and in doing so dis-create it. What remains?
