Meditation Cafe: What Healing Looks Like In Meditation

Can you heal through Meditation practice. The answer is yes, AND there are likely things you will need to do as well as Meditation to support your body, mind and Soul.

Meditation can take you a place where you are more in tune with your body, mind and emotions. It takes you to a place of deep listening, where the body can literally “speak” what it needs, long held emotions released and unhelpful thought patterns are dissolved.

In Sanskrit there are not two words for body and mind, there is only one. This sense of body and mind being separate causes us westerners a lot of problems. Thoughts affect the state and functioning of the body, trauma to the body affects the state of the mind. Emotions are the barometer of whether or not we are functioning in Harmony. Imagine eating something and notice how saliva appears in your mouth even though there is no food present. Think of time when you injured yourself and how miserable the pain made you feel. The two are intrinsically connected.

“Of course”, you may say.. And yet look at how western medicine generally treats “illness’ whether mental or physical. Separately.

In Meditation the body deeply relaxes. As the body deeply relaxes the body begins to heal itself, because that what it does. You could say that the body is always healing itself. You might consider that what we call illness and symptoms is also the body healing itself. The question then becomes, how can you support it? Sadly we often don’t want to hear that bit as it will inevitably involve changes of some kind. Meditation can take us to place of radical honesty if we are prepared to listen.

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

What healing looks like in Meditation:

  • Meditation can take you into a deep healing sleep, if the body needs it.
  • You may experience pain or throbbing in old injury sites, as the body reaches deep levels of relaxation, blocked energy in these areas begins to move.
  • You may experience energy popping, whizzing and spinning, as there is increased flow of Prana, life force energy. If you experience any of these things try to relax into them, the energy will eventually settle down again. All are normal.
  • You may experience heat and burning. You are literally burning up toxins and unhelpful old patterns of behaviour.
  • You may experience sensations of cold. In Shamanism cold winds are thought to be “demons and entities” leaving the body. It could also simply be that your body needs coolness to bring itself back into balance.
  • You may have an emotional release whether it be the giggles, tears of Joy or of pain! Trapped emotions that were suppressed at times of physical or mental trauma can seek release when we are in a deep state of healing. Often the release of emotions is directly related to the body’s ability to physically heal.
  • You may experience past memories from situation that your subconscious is seeking resolution.

All these experiences are normal in Meditation, which is why, as I keep reiterating, some of us may need external support. The more you can welcome it all and actually see all these “healing” symptoms as a good thing, the easier it becomes.
