Meditation Cafe: When The Pendulum Swings

Initially, when we first become aware of the Silence within, we may experience it as an either/or experience. We think when we are not aware of the Silence that it isn’t there, that we are either in it or not in it, yet we are always in it because it is the nature of our conscious awareness.

A more accurate way to view this is that our attention simply moves outwards. Instead of viewing life from this expanded awareness that is still, when this happens, we may feel like we are on a swinging pendulum of emotional states and vacillating thoughts. There appears to be no space.

I heard my teacher say many times, the more conscious you become the more you actually feel. As your consciousness muscle expands, so does your capacity to behold all that is happening in your awareness with a more compassionate and less personal lens. Notice I am using the word behold, not transcend. Make of that what you will.

The majority of awakening humanity is moving in and out of conscious awareness. This is natural and necessary and how consciousness expands. Like going to the gym, every time you consciously come back to the present moment, you are strengthening that consciousness muscle and just like building a physical muscle, this doesn’t happen overnight.

Give yourself time, through your practice, eyes closed or eyes open, to allow the presence within you to expand and grow. The more you build that muscle, the less that pendulum will knock you over when it swings, and if it does, you’ll get up more quickly and more easily recognise when you need to reach out your hand for support!
