I cannot tell you why it is or at what point it will happen, but if you keep up a regular practice of eyes closed Meditation (focused on Silence) you will begin to notice that the well of Calmness within you starts to naturally expand.
At first you think that you’re closing your eyes to have 20 mins of Peace and Calm. You think that you are dropping your bucket of awareness into the well of Calmness and pulling it up. You have a drink of Calm if you’re lucky (sometimes the well is polluted and its not so Calm as your body and mind clears out!) and it appears to wear off after a while. You may choose to only Meditate when you feel you need your cup of Calm and not on the days when you feel Calm already.

If you can push through that and Meditate regardless of whether you feel you need it or not, eventually you will come to realise that your awareness is not the bucket. At some unforeseen tipping point, the bucket is no longer needed and you become predominantly aware of the Calmness, which becomes less and less polluted the more you practice.
You may still remember the bucket from time to time and even catch yourself trying to use it, yet the scales have tipped so far by now that when you see this, the weight of the Calmness always pulls you straight back.

So we start with a little awareness of calmness and a lot of awareness of chaos and eventually the scales switch. There will inevitably always be chaos. That hasn’t gone anywhere either, that is the Nature of life. The forces of Creation, Maintenance, Dis-Creation, are continually at play in the different areas of your life, throughout the whole of your life, yet how you experience them all is irrevocably changed through consistent Meditation practice.
How wonderful, through your practice, to be able to welcome it all, knowing that deep, deep down in the well of your Being this Calmness is holding you, always waiting for you to come back to it.
Join me tonight for your bucket of Calm, knowing that each time you dip into the well, you are actually dissolving the bucket! We use Self Enquiry to create Heartfelt personal Mantras for eyes closed practice and also that you can use with your eyes open as you go about the rest of your day. This article beautifully emphasizes the power of regular meditation practice in expanding the well of calmness within oneself. It reminds us that even in the midst of chaos, meditation allows us to connect with our inner calmness. Truly inspiring!
