Meditation Cafe: Contemplating Integrity

“Integrity is one of the most important and oft-cited of virtue terms. It is also perhaps the most puzzling. For example, while it is sometimes used virtually synonymously with ‘moral,’ we also at times distinguish acting morally from acting with integrity. Persons of integrity may in fact act immorally—though they would usually not know they are acting immorally. Thus one may acknowledge a person to have integrity even though that person may hold what one thinks are importantly mistaken moral views.”

STANFORD ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PHILOSOPHY

Contemplating Integrity can be a worthwhile self enquiry. It can invite clarity and the opportunity to do things differently, to align our actions more fully with our Soul and inner knowing. Sometimes, to be in Integrity with ones Soul, may mean to go against the narrative that society would like to imprint on us.

To stay true to your own morals and inner knowing and to challenge authorities that purport to know best takes courage. It’s easy to get swept up in the tidal wave of a majority, even when the majority is acting out of fear. If there’s one thing that takes us away from Integrity and inner knowing, it is fear.

To be fully in Integrity we might need to change our relationship too many things. We may need to find our voice so we can speak the Truth we are afraid to admit, whether that be a boundary that needs setting or a Love that wants to be fully expressed. We may need to find some Strength so we can walk away from situations and people we know are harmful, or leave soul destroying situation, or accept that what once served us no longer does. We may need to find some Courage and Bravery to move beyond our fears and Self limiting beliefs so we can step confidently towards that to which our SOUL is guiding us.

For me Integrity is a line (you might say that line is the big I, the I AM Presence) I find myself swaying away from but can always realign to. It doesn’t move, I move away from it. It feels like when you’re taking a picture and the horizon line on the camera tilts, a little adjustment once noticed and you are in alignment again. To walk that line is like walking a razors edge. Sometimes deviating from it feels sharp and yet that sharpness is what snaps you back more quickly.

Life is like this. If you lose sight of the horizon, whether it be the bigger picture or your SOULS true expression, you may find yourself literally upside-down on your head, or flat on your back, getting a different perspective so when you stand up again you see your horizon, your Self and your Truth more clearly.

Seeing is not enough. To be in Integrity we must take the first step towards what we know to correct for us.

What does Integrity feel like to you? Where in your life are you out of Integrity? I’d love to hear you contemplations on Integrity in the comments.
