What Do You See?

At the weekend I performed my first joke on stage for Saturday Night @ The OM. Our theme was “Return Of The Light”, in anticipation for the coming Winter Solstice that occurs on 21st December each year. Thankfully everybody laughed at my joke! I also, shared the myth of Japanese Sun Goddess Amaterasu and performed an old poem, “I See You”.

In short, Amaterasu seals herself in a cave after being traumatised by her jealous brother Susanoo. Not wanting to see any more and grieving the losses of his destruction (he’s the God of Storms!), she refuses to come out, plunging not just her world but the whole world into darkness. She has to be tricked back out of the cave, through a kind of calculated deception (she is the life-giving Sun after all), by those whom Love and revere her.

There’s an invitation in this story to explore where we are hiding our own light and to also to see how our own unwillingness to deal with our uncomfortable emotions of grief, shame, fear, jealousy, affects not only us but those whom love us. This myth carries many parallels with life today, with so much trauma in the world that is difficult to witness, storms raging with more frequency, the destruction and breaking down of a world we once knew that, like it or not, is crying out for change. We need Amaterasu’s light more than ever, to remember that whatever is happening today, after the dark of night, the suns again rises and we have the chance to see things differently and create anew.

Saturday Night @ The OM, for those that don’t know is an event I organise every 6-8 weeks to thrust myself out of my own cave, step completely out of my comfort zone and share what’s in my Heart through poetry and stories, along with invited special guests whom are musicians, song writers and spoken word poets. I cannot adequately put into words the Magick that happens in this space, especially when we have performers debuting, taking that step out of their cave into the limelight, overcoming the fears of “What will people think?”, “Will they like my offerings?”, “Will they like me?!”. It’s no small feat.

The Truth is that some will like it, some won’t, we all have preferences and yet it doesn’t have to matter if WE like what we are offering and can get out of our own way long enough for it to be a gift from our own Heart, our own Creativity, our own Light, to the world. If one person out of thirty needs to hear what we have to say, it is worth the discomfort of feeling the fear and doing it anyway.

I’ve had beautiful feedback on the poem, so here it is again (to be read slowly):

I see You

But you don’t want to be seen

You don’t want to fight your demons today

Only to nestle, quite contently

In the belly of ignorance

Wishing it will all go away

Hoping things will just change

I see You

Your anguish overwhelms my senses

I feel the heaviness of your aching heart

As if it were my own

You long to be loved

To be seen

Yet you hide behind

A hollow mask of smiles

Wearing your “fine” robes

Playing a role for which you were not cast

I see You

You know you've been rumbled

I smell your fear of judgement and retribution

In my eyes will you see an Angel or the devil

For I will be of your own choosing

Will you allow the tears

That flow from the river of Truth

To bust the damn of indignation

That is painted with lies

Postulated by fear

Or will you flee

I see You

I see Love

Your labels brand me a liar

I used to think it was me

Something I’d said or done

Endlessly contemplating the why?

Until I became you

Hiding my eyes in fear of rejection

Pretending I was blind

"I see You"

Grace whispered gently in my ear

“Don’t worry my dear

You have my eyes…

As the world flows through

The body of your Being

Let my gaze
Be the anchor

That steadies your vision

In the ocean full of waves of Love”

I see You

I am here to be seen

You are Love

You are another Me

  1. beautiful poem Raye and resonates with me very much, spent most of my life hiding in that cave!

on a zoom at the weekend someone said “never underestimate the power of one person believing in you” “I am here”, “I believe in you”

He was so very right and it makes all the difference in the world to have one person believe in you.

Still feeling the need to spend time in my winters cave but I see the light of a new sun on the horizon patiently waiting for the axis to shift and shine the beautiful light of loving kindness and compassion on all who are ready and willing to allow this beautiful next level energy in to their hearts and soul.

For now though the deep rest that winter invites and I welcome it to soothe my soul and reflect on what was. Doing my best to let go of the struggles, knowing within them that a gift is waiting when I have the eyes to see.

hope all is well with you, love seeing the photos you post

with kindest wishes and love Deborah x
