Meditation Cafe: Responding To Triggers

It’s tempting when we are triggered to avoid, distract or rant our way through it. I’ve noticed a pattern of being triggered myself quite a lot in this last week and I’ve had many opportunities to see underlying patterns and to rewrite the ending. Anyone else?

From https://www.betterup.com/blog/triggers (worth a read if you are new to the word triggers) says: “A trigger is a person, place, thing, or situation that elicits an intense or unexpected emotional response or causes an individual to relive a past trauma. Any sensory stimulus can be a potential trigger. Triggers are unique from threats. Essentially, a non-threatening stimulus is triggering an autonomic (fight-or-flight) response.” ,

I’ve seen a trend this last month of people saying that Meditation (especially the Heart centred type) is a bypass and a way to avoid dealing with and healing from a trigger. This is NOT my personal experience. It gives me space and awareness to see so much more and to actually feel but not wallow in the story that created the trigger in the first place.

Some triggers related to traumas are deep and may need the help of a trained psychologist or psychotherapist. Meditation and therapy isn’t an either or situation. Being honest is the beginning, being able to have the space to see where the past is affecting the now takes practice. Changing the narrative and reconditioning the body to react differently takes time. Compassion is needed as we open to healing and seeing the world with new eyes.
