On Saturday I felt floored. I’d wanted to get some physical work done on the boat and my body was like, “NOPE”. There’s always a fine line (for me anyways) between knowing whether you need to take a deep breath and push through or lie down and rest. Engaging in the latter has generally been quite futile, hurling me into a deep groove, initiating a whirlpool of frustration and guilt, so even if the body isn’t moving, there’s a lot of not helpful movement generating in the mind.
My Meditation practice has given me the awareness to see this groove (which can feel like a deep ocean ravine), and over time learn to meet it and my body differently. My meditation practice allows my body to rest because I use it to dissolve the whirlpool. On Saturday, I had apparently stepped over the line. Body did not wake to alarm. When I awoke I couldn’t string two brain cells together.

When our body is in deep healing mode it does this best in sleep. Instead of doing what my mind had planned my body decided that I was going to have a lay in for 3 hours. After attempting to get up for sustenance, mind decided a half hour supine Meditation before my movement medicine practice and then doing the physical “stuff” would be a good idea. Body decided a 3 hour deep sleep, oblivious to the Meditation timer, followed by a couple hours mooching around still not being able to string any brain cells together and then a full nights sleep was what was needed.
The body will always have precedence over the mind when the mind is not functioning in alignment with it. The body will override all your best plans when it needs to rest and heal.
The next morning, having not resisted the resting, energy had returned, movement medicine practice prevailed, I was reminded that energy always moves when we don’t add glue to it by forcing or judging my body and mind.
Sometimes we need a little realignment to get the flow going. Sometimes that is rest, sometimes that is movement. Sometimes it’s taken out of our hands so we at least have a chance to realign with what our body and heart truly needs.
