Meditation Cafe: Beliefs or Bliss? What Would You Choose?

I’m feeling a bit under the weather with a cold, so gonna try keep this short and share another attempt at a Freedom inspired Haiku to contemplate, written for the last Saturday Night @The OM.

Who are you really?
The sum of all your beliefs
Or Bliss Eternal

A little side note here… Yogic Bliss is said to be more akin to an unbroken sense of inner Contentment, not a state of Ecstatic Rapture to which many Spiritual Seekers seem to be striving. If we believe and mistake the latter for that which is steady and lasting, we will be kept always wanting.

Spirituality and some if its practices can be addictive. There are many substances, natural and chemical that can transport us into states of ecstatic Heart opening Rapture or hell, depending on the contents of our inner world. People can become addicted to healing. To the highs that contrast the lows.

Exalted states in Meditation can also leave us wanting more of them and in the doing so we may miss the simple steadiness of simply Being with whatever delight or delusion, revelation or repulsion, is passing through the mind, because we know in our Heart it is not who we are.

Part of my personal practice is to stay very vigilant to not get lost in or attached to Exalted experiences (of which I can drop into quite easily) and conversely not to deny them either. They happen, as is this cold happening, whether mind wants it to be there or not. Can I have a Blissful cold.. Yes! Does me having a cold mean I can’t access Bliss (in the Yogic sense)… No! What is happening in my outer experience is not a bar by which I measure how “well’ I am doing or how “Spiritual” I am. These are thoughts to be vigilant with for sure.

I’d like to invite you to examine your beliefs around Yoga and Meditation and Healing, what state is it your mind thinks it is looking for? What does your mind think it will look like, feel like? Because I can assure you if you hold on tight to any belief about what it should look like, you risk missing the simple Truth of the Beauty that is you right now.

Let us explore what Beauty naturally reveals itself when we simply stop seeking any particular experience. Let us let go of our own personal definition of Beauty, of Bliss, of Freedom and see what appears beyond the thoughts that Meditation is boring and we can’t be doing it right, and we’re not “there” because it should look like (insert belief) or because we aren’t in a 24/7 state of orgasmic Rapture.

Don’t be concerned with any of the Spiritual thrills and frills. Keep it simple, first things first. Know from your own direct experience that you are not your thoughts and beliefs. Not ANY thought or belief. Thoughts are ok. Critical thinking is good and necessary. Beliefs can change.

Hand on Heart, close your eyes and be curious to See as your Self. You will need Courage. You will need Vigilance. You will forget who you are, you will identify with special thoughts and you will remember again more times than you count on your fingers and toes! If you’d like to keep remembering come join us for some inner Cosmic explorations.

Oh well.. That wasn’t short after all! You might like to read a poem I wrote a while ago, pointing to some of the traps mentioned above. It’s called Spiritual Bollocks. Some people love it, some people get triggered by it. Please read with a sense of humour. Being able to laugh at ourselves is a good indication that the the knots of thoughts and beliefs we bind ourselves with are loosening!

  1. Oops! There was a late night, sleepy eyed typo in the Title! Of was meant to be Or, now changed (for those received by email!). Hope the title now makes more sense 🙃
