Meditation Cafe: The Practice Of Returning

I am very aware of how easy it is to drift away from the present moment. Drifting doesn’t mean we are failing, because this modern life pulls our attention in a thousand directions at once.

Noise.
Screens.
Thoughts.
Responsibilities.
All screaming for our attention. It seems like an endless stream of things to process, prepare for, respond to.

For sensitive nervous systems especially, it can feel like we’re constantly being swept outward. Perhaps then for us, Meditation is not really about becoming perfectly still or emptying the mind at all. Perhaps it is simply the practice of returning.

We can return to the breath.
We can return to the body.
We can return to this moment.
Again… and again… and again.

Not perfectly.
Just gently.

🌸 I wrote this poem a while back: Wake Up

Wake Up
From 1000 slumbers

It matters not how many times

Wake Up

From 1000 slumbers

Celebrate 1000 times

Wake Up

And 1000 petals

Blossom into Love Divine

Wake Up

And 1000 journeys

In a moment takes no time

🌿 Heyoka’s Haiku: Return

Mind wanders away
Softly called back home again
Here within this breath

One of the things I love about Heart Words Meditation is its simplicity.

Rather than trying to “stop thinking” or “stop feeling”, we work gently with intentional words or themes… For the day, the week, the month, even the year, allowing them to become anchors we can return to when the mind drifts into overwhelm, fear, distraction, or old stories.

We don’t use the words to force our mind, but to help us remember what is beyond it. Our heart word “Mantras” become a quiet inner compass back to the Present moment and back to ourselves.

There’s actually good reason why simple grounding practices can feel so regulating.

Research suggests that gently bringing attention back to a single point of focus, such as the breath, a word, or bodily sensation, can help calm the nervous system and reduce mental rumination. Practices like Mindfulness and Heart Centred Meditation have also been linked with improved emotional regulation and reduced stress responses over time.

In other words… Each time we return, we strengthen the pathway home to our Self in its most original sense.

Over time, this awareness of Self becomes the single point of focus. We become more attuned to and identified with the whom (our Presence) that is having the experience, than with the experience itself.

So perhaps that is the real practice…

Not never drifting.
Not becoming some endlessly peaceful being floating above human experience.

Simply noticing when we’ve wandered…

And choosing, with Compassion, to come back.

Contemplation

✍🏼 What helps me return to myself when I feel overwhelmed or scattered?

✍🏼 If I chose one “Heart Word” for this season of my life, what might it be inviting me towards?

Meditation Cafe

Tonight we are focusing on the practice of returning, using our Heart Words for the day, week, month and year, remembering how we can use them for daily practice (should we want to!)
