Meditation Cafe: What We Refuse to Feel

Last week we touched on how in many traditional Meditation spaces, there is an accidental culture of spiritual bypassing. This is the habit of using spiritual concepts or states of calm to side-step and minimize painful human emotions. What happens though when attempting neutrally, forced forgiveness, or ingenuous positivity, feels less like Peace and more like self-abandonment?

I recall one of the Monks on my Mastery of the Self course chastising me for weeping over missing my daughters. “Aren’t you done yet”, he said.

I didn’t actually have a problem with my tears, which in my experience were a beautiful expression of Love. My interpretation of applying “the teachings” was to welcome and move toward the feeling, not away from it. To meet it with compassion until it dissolved naturally, whether that took two seconds or twenty minutes. This did not appear to be the accepted interpretation by the majority.

Eventually I left the organisation with which I trained because they did not adequately support people in meeting their trauma. I saw time and time again the rejection of natural human responses to trauma in the name of becoming “Enlightened”.

Welcome emotions
To be held in Loves embrace
Acknowledge your pain

Today, I want to share a revolutionary concept that beautifully bridges the gap between deep trauma recovery and authentic mindfulness, being Alice Miller’s idea of the “Enlightened Witness”, and how we can inhabit this role for ourselves through our Heart Words practice.

The Radical Rebellion of Alice Miller…

Alice Miller was a psychotherapist who completely broke away from traditional psychoanalysis. Traditional, classical analysis (rooted in old Freudian theory) often suggested that a person’s inner emotional turmoil was caused by their own destructive drives or subconscious fantasies. To make matters worse, traditional analysts were trained to sit back as detached, clinical, completely neutral “blank mirrors.”

Miller fiercely rebelled against this. She argued that childhood pain and adult neurosis are never caused by fantasy. She argued they are the result of real, systemic emotional injuries, parental control, or developmental neglect. Furthermore, Miller insisted that emotional neutrality in the face of suffering is unhelpful. Instead, she introduced the concept of the Enlightened Witness.

An Enlightened Witness is someone who provides unconditional empathy and validation. They do not tell you to minimize your pain, they do not ask you to intellectualize it, and they absolutely reject the toxic demand to “just forgive and move on.” Instead, they look at your wounded inner child and say:

“I see you. Your pain is real. Your rage is entirely justified. You are allowed to feel this.”

Why “Feeling Your Feelings” Can Be Complex (The AuDHD Reality)

While Miller initially looked for this witness in an external therapist, true self-sovereignty means learning to build this advocate inside our own minds. As an AuDHD Meditation teacher, I am deeply aware that “just feeling your feelings” is often a wildly complex, exhausting directive.

For neurodivergent folks, processing emotions can be uniquely challenging due to:

  • Alexithymia: Difficulty identifying, naming, or physically placing exactly what emotion is happening in the body.
  • Monotropic Hyperfocus: Getting entirely swallowed by a sensory or emotional wave, making “mindful observation” feel impossible.
  • Sensory Overload: A strong emotion can feel like physical sensory distress (a very loud noise in the nervous system).

Meditating with a neurodivergent mind is not impossible but it does require that we learn self Compassion. Trying to force stillness in any mind is challenging but in a neurodivergent mind can inadvertently trigger intense nervous system overwhelm or a feeling of failure.

Heart Words: A Bridge To Your Internal Enlightened Witness

Heart Words practice is potent and can be profoundly healing because it has the potential to transform you into your own internal Enlightened Witness.

Instead of demanding your mind be blank and silent, or trying to force a neurodivergent brain (if you have one) to navigate an abstract emotional storm, Heart Words give your mind an anchor.

When you practice Heart Words, you step out of the role of the detached, cold observer and you become a fierce, compassionate advocate for your own Heart.

Finding your unique “Heart Word” or mantra acts like a handrail. If your system is swimming in an unstructured pool of anxiety or past trauma, anchoring to a resonant, self-authored word gives the brain some scaffolding, a tangible structure to hold onto while the emotion is being felt and processed, even if you can’t name it.

Alice Miller taught that the body holds the perfect, uncorrupted record of our history. When we use our personal Mantras to charm the mind into stillness, we aren’t bypassing the body, we are creating a safe, deeply restful container for the body to finally release its biological testimony.

By practicing this way, we do something traditional psychoanalysis and rigid mindfulness practices often fail to do. We stop abandoning ourselves. We become the unconditionally loving, fiercely validating protective adult that our inner child always needed.
